CEYLON (SRI LANKA): Patina Retro Pattern Crown, 1808 4 Rixdollar, prooflike, aluminium + capsule - top grade
2012 Krause catalogue of "Unusual World Coins" ref. no. KM X # 11a: prooflike $20.
This coin was one in a series of Patina Retro Pattern Crowns issued in 2007 and 2008. This series was inspired by W. J. Taylor who, in the mid 1800s, produced a number of rare retro patterns of King George III coins which had been struck by Matthew Bouton at the Soho mint in Birmingham. This modern series has been produced by a mint engraver, close to the original mint site in Birmingham.
Each coin is dated 1808 and marks an important period in Britain and British Empire history - the abolition of the slave trade after 1807, the acquisition of Sierra Lone in 1808, the Rum Rebllion in New South Wales in 1808 and the introduction of token coinage to Ireland in 1808.
The coins were issued in various metals with very low mintages. This one is struck in aluminium and had a mintage of only 600 coins
It has a diameter of 41 mm, weighs 8.6 grams and has a prooflike finish.
It comes in a clear plastic capsule (no certificate).
It is in excellent condition.
